Book Review: Strong Looks Better Naked by Khloe Kardashian
When I saw that the Literary Ladies book club was reading Strong Looks Better Naked by Khloe Kardashian I was intrigued. This isn’t a book I would have picked up on my own for a couple of reasons. For one, I’m not a huge follower of the Kardashians and I find it hard to take them seriously. Plus, I’m not too much of a fan of books or memoirs written by celebrities in general. On the other hand, Khloe seems like one of the more sane Kardashians and her body transformation has been pretty amazing. So, I figured I would expand my horizons and give this book a shot. I was pleasantly surprised.
I gave it 3 out of 5 stars on Goodreads and here’s why:
First of all, I was surprised that the book focused on more than exercise and weight loss which I wouldn’t have guessed based on the title/cover photo. It was broken into three parts: Body, Mind & Heart. So really, only a third of it focused on being fit and eating right. The rest focused on being in a mentally healthy state and having good character; being beautiful from the inside out.
I enjoyed that there was more substance to the book than exercise tips and recipes. There were some healthy recipes in the food chapter though and a few looked like they may be worth trying but some seemed pointless like the recipe for Kris Kardashians vodka tonic. I never could have figured out how to make a vodka tonic if it weren’t for that, not! That sentiment kind of mirrors my thoughts throughout the book, I would read one section and say to myself wow, that’s a good way of thinking about it and then I would read another section and think, duh! There was nothing groundbreaking in the book but there were definitely moments that made me think I could do better in certain areas of my life.
I completely agreed with Khloe’s outlook on being healthy and in shape: it’s a lifestyle not a diet. I’m also with her on enjoying exercise as a stress reliever and finding some sort of activity that you enjoy. And I share her views on positive thinking, hard work and keeping busy. However, there were definitely moments when my thoughts were that’s not happening or easy for you to say. Clearly, not everyone has the same opportunities or resources as her and can’t take advantage of a personal trainer or some crazy, over the top, natural, organic diet.
I appreciated how Khloe opened up about her relationship with Lamar, Rob’s weight and depression struggle and dealing with her father’s death. In my opinion, she kept a good balance between honesty about her life and keeping the more specific details to herself. I felt like I could genuinely relate to her when it came to working through grief, insecurity and body image. I’m happy with the fact that this book sends a positive message to anyone that may be influenced by her. My favorite part of the book were the inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout. I love a good quote!
Overall, I think this is a decent book to read at the beginning of a new year for some inspiration and positive vibes!
